Process Flow
Animated overview of the full workflow
TL;DR
Every time you publish changes in GTM, a new version is created. Versions are numbered snapshots of all tags, triggers, and variables at that point. You can view any previous version, compare versions, and instantly roll back if something goes wrong. Always add version notes describing what changed.
Step-by-Step Guide
Follow these 4 steps to complete this guide
- 1
Publishing
Click Submit in the top right. Add a version name and description (e.g., 'Added GA4 purchase event tracking'). Click Publish. The changes go live immediately.
- 2
Version History
Go to Versions tab to see all published versions. Each shows date, publisher, and notes. Click any version to see its contents.
- 3
Rolling Back
If a publish causes issues, click the three-dot menu on the working version you want to revert to > Set as latest version. This instantly reverts all changes.
- 4
Best Practices
Always add descriptive version notes. Publish intentionally — do not publish untested changes. Use Preview mode before every publish.
